It was in 1934, amidst the Great Depression, when two special women, Mrs. Sadie Lefkowitz and Mrs. Lillian Beckett, joined forces to charter an organization dedicated to providing home nursing care in Dallas for those who could not afford health care. The Visiting Nurse Association opened for business at 1901 North Harwood in a small office rented for $10 a month.
Today, VNA touches more than 10,000 lives annually, providing Meals on Wheels and quality home health and hospice care to the elderly, infirm and terminally ill. Throughout 2009 we will celebrate the 75th Jubilee highlighting our seventy-five years of community support and seventy-five years of caring for the community.
Our event theme, “Roots of Life,” signifies VNA’s deep roots in the community. Trees are our symbol—reminding us that VNA began as a sapling in 1934 and, through the nourishment of the community, planted our roots wide and deep. To commemorate our “Roots of Life” theme, VNA will help provide seedlings as a part of the Trinity River Project, joining our care for people with our concern for the environment in which we live.
Scheduled for May 2, 2009, our Jubilee celebration will be an extraordinary evening. Guests will be treated to a unique auction and dinner overlooking the ponds and grasslands at the Trinity Audubon Center in Dallas (just an eight minute drive from downtown), where iris, redbuds, and wildflowers will herald spring.
