To help people age with dignity and independence at home
VNA Today August 2016
You're Our Biggest Fan!

VNA strives to do more and through the generosity of donors like you, we make it happen! A number of our Meals on Wheels clients don't have air conditioning and for those who do, many keep their temperature high to avoid big electric bills in the Texas heat. For clients in need, VNA provides fans to help stay cool when the temperature is rising. With daily highs peaking at 100 degrees recently, fans have been in high demand.

Many generous donors have given fans or dollars for purchasing fans-more than $2,600 has been raised so far! The largest gift by a single group goes to Southwest Airlines, a long-time VNA friend and partner. Their donation of 58 fans will help area Dallas seniors throughout the long summer months-in addition to their gift to purchase even more!

The loyal and committed supporters of VNA highlight the immeasurable kindness and love for our Dallas County seniors in need. Thank you for standing with VNA—all year round! Want to join our fan club? Email Jennifer at atwoodj@vnatexas.org.

Being Mortal
The film Being Mortal, aired nationally on FRONTLINE in 2015 has started important conversations across the country about end-of-life care. As Texas' oldest and most trusted hospice provider, VNA was selected for a grant to help bring the topic to the community. The goal is to help people begin to consider their options and communicate their wishes. We will host several screenings of the film along with panel discussions.

The film is an adaptation of the book Being Mortal written by Dr. Gawande, and tells his story as a physician in understanding a person's true priorities so they can be honored at the end of life. Our first event is slated for late September and includes a panel discussion with Dr. Mary Norman of Highland Springs, Dr. Neeta Nayak of Baylor Senior Health, VNA Chaplain Paul Rambler, and Lori Leu, Elder Law Attorney of Leu & Peirce, PLLC. Summer fun is here and so is our first e-news and I hope you've enjoyed it! These months can be extra challenging for serving seniors as we juggle work and volunteer vacation schedules. For our Meals on Wheels clients, the extreme heat makes it urgent for us to deliver "more than a meal," as our daily safety checks help ensure clients are staying hydrated and cool. Thank you for your continued support and enjoy the rest of your summer!
