In days gone by, generations
of families lived within the same small communities where parents
were cared for by their adult children. Today, nearly everyone under
retirement age works and jobs often separate the generations by
many miles.
When elders need help to maintain their independence, VNA Eldercare
volunteers can provide escorted transportation for shopping and
other errands, home safety awareness and companionship. In 2006,
200 clients received 44,600 volunteer hours of services.
| Nora, a 90-year old widow, contacted VNA because
she needed transportation getting to doctor appointments. She
lives alone in her own home. A daughter and grandchildren live
in the area, but full-time jobs prevent them from driving Nora
places during the day. VNA Eldercare provides a volunteer to
drive Nora to her appointments and other errands and to check
up on her occasionally. Support from the community helps the
elderly to continue living in the comfort and familiarity of
their own homes. |
