For most of us, injury
and illness represent short-lived challenges. But for those with
acute or chronic illness or disability, life-time care may be necessary.
VNA Long Term Care is an alternative to institutional care for
persons with chronic illnesses or disabilities. Primary Home Care and other
VNA programs help keep families intact through home-based support
services. During 2006, 629,441 units of service were provided to
1,458 Long Term Care clients.
| Howard, or Cowboy, as he is known to his friends,
has Cerebral Palsy as a result of a difficult birth. Already
disabled, he suffered a stroke as an adult, which caused complete
paralysis on his right side and limited use of his left arm.
Even though he was young, Cowboy faced a lifetime in a nursing
home. After the City of Dallas made it possible for Cowboy to
purchase a repossessed mobile home, VNA coordinated installation
of an automatic door opener, wheel chair ramp, rolling shower
and emergency response system. Additionally, VNA trained special
attendants to administer Cowboy’s medication. He now lives
independently in the comfort of his own home. |
