About Meals on Wheels
The Meals on Wheels Program in Dallas was organized in 1957 as a pilot project by the Women’s Council of Dallas County in recognition of the needs of the homebound elderly and disabled. It was one of the first Meals on Wheels programs in the United States. In 1973, the Women’s Council of Dallas County asked the Visiting Nurse Association of Texas (VNA) to assume responsibility for the service. VNA agreed to do so, viewing the service as a logical extension of home health care and as an advancement of the agency’s mission. At the time VNA began working with the Meals on Wheels program there were 125 clients per day.
In 2008 VNA completed the Beatrice M. Haggerty Kitchen, where today we prepare more than one million fresh, hot, nutritious meals annually and deliver them to seniors who are homebound or dining at senior centers in Dallas county.
