Results of Your Help

Your support does make a difference. More than 10,000 people are touched each day by VNA care across the eight North Texas counties that VNA serves. Contributions from individuals, churches and synagogues, foundations, corporations and organizations provide $2 million toward the care of the sick, hungry, disabled and dying. But results can best be told in stories about the people whose lives are touched by your generosity.

A Hungry Person is Nourished
A widow living alone, Louise was diagnosed with cancer. Although she had very limited resources, Louise was ineligible for most assistance programs that would help with household expenses during her illness--because she owned her small home. Support from people like you made it possible for Louise to receive VNA Meals on Wheels, providing her a nutritionally balanced meal each day. Today, she is healthy and once again self-reliant.

A Sick Woman Heals
Badly burned, Retta spent some long, painful days in Parkland Hospital’s Burn Unit, but at last she was going home. Aftercare was crucial to ensure her wounds healed without infection and to deal with the extreme discomfort. Even though Retta lived in a rural area, a VNA Home Health Aide was assigned to provide the kind of care she needed. Thanks to VNA Community Support Funds, Retta recovered fully without even one readmission to the hospital.

A Dying Man Is Comforted
Fifty-three year old Cecil was being treated for lymphoma. He lived alone and had no one to assist or care for him. When Cecil’s condition worsened and he became bedridden, VNA Hospice nurses and chaplains were there to care for and comfort him during his last days. Two days before Cecil died, he was approved for Medicaid benefits and moved to a nursing home.

Relief for a Weary Hero
Ed and Hope have been married 58 years. He is a disabled military veteran and has been caring for Hope, who has Alzheimer’s Disease. Respite from the ever-constant attendance to Hope is provided by a VNA Home Health Aide specially trained to care for Alzheimer’s patients. Each week, Ed can look forward to spending a few hours shopping for groceries, seeing his doctor or just fishing. He can do so with peace of mind, knowing that Hope will receive the same kind of loving care he provides for her, even while he is away.

“I have always been so convinced of the worthwhile contribution that the VNA makes to the community. Over the years, when there’s been a void in the community, VNA has filled that void with needed home health care services.”
-- Beatrice M. Haggerty, (in memory)
