Eldercare Friends
Volunteers are matched with senior citizens currently receiving VNA Meals on Wheels or Home Health services, who are no longer driving but still want to live in their homes or apartments independently. In days gone by, generations of families lived within the same small communities where parents were cared for by their adult children. Today, nearly everyone under retirement age works, and jobs often separate the generations by many miles.
As a volunteer, you can provide companionship, telephone reassurance, shopping, errands, and reading mail. Program services do not include housekeeping, personal care, or medication management. This is a free service for seniors. The client will live close to where you live and will meet your time restraints – typically, once a week for a few hours. We operate in Dallas County.
Because so many seniors need help traveling to and from grocery stores, the pharmacy, or physicians’ offices, VNA Eldercare Friends remains one of the more necessary – and popular – programs with seniors and volunteers alike. During these short journeys, friendships are often forged and lively conversation exchanged, providing seniors with both a necessary service and an enjoyable experience as beneficial as any medicine that a physician can provide.
Eldercare Telephone Friends
Volunteers make weekly telephone calls to lonely senior citizens. Times are flexible. An outgoing personality and ability to communicate well over the telephone are essential. This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for those who themselves are homebound or only have a limited time available a few times a week.
Training is provided the first Wednesday of each month at noon at 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas Texas 75247, and by appointment.
