Even if you have just a few hours to help, VNA has a volunteer opportunity for you.
Day of Caring Project
“Test drive” VNA’s Meals on Wheels program with your group in as little as three hours one weekday morning! We will set aside the number of routes you request for the day, give you a brief volunteer training that morning, and then send your group out to deliver hot meals where we need you in Dallas County.
Greeting Cards
This is a great student project! Make colorful greeting cards for VNA patients and clients – Happy New Year, Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, Happy Thanksgiving, etc. Cards accepted in any quantity and must be received by VNA staff two weeks prior to any holiday.
Holiday Gift Giving Project
Every year, VNA collects full size toiletry items (shampoo, lotion, bar soap, washcloth, tube socks, toothbrush, toothpaste) for more than 4,000 patients and clients throughout our North Texas service area. For many of those we serve, this is the only gift they will receive during the holiday season. Wrap session parties are held in late summer and fall at the VNA Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Center. Volunteers individually wrap each toiletry item, and then the gift bags are stuffed via volunteer assembly line. Financial donations are also welcome, if you’d rather we do the shopping for you! This is a great project for students and families. VNA Meals on Wheels clients receive their holiday gift bags with their hot meal on Christmas morning. 2009 project is finished; 2010 dates to be determined.
Holiday Meal Deliveries
Thanksgiving and Christmas Day meals are picked up at the VNA office in Dallas County between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on each holiday. A typical route serves six to eight clients. This volunteer opportunity is popular with families and fills up quickly. You may be the only visitor some of our clients have on the holiday morning. All routes for Thanksgiving and Christmas 2009 have been filled.
Light Up A Life
The holiday season is a time when individuals search for meaningful ways to remember loved ones who have died. VNA Hospice assists with this process by offering Light Up a Life. Families remember loved ones with a tribute of hand-lettered doves on the Light Up a Life Holiday Tree or with the crystal VNA keepsake ornament. Holiday trees are located in Denton, Dallas, and McKinney. 2009 project is finished; 2010 dates to be determined.
Volunteer opportunities for this program include:
- Preparing Light Up a Life information for mailing in September
- Tracking donor information during October and November
- Hand-lettering paper doves with the names of individuals being honored in November
- Attaching hand-lettered paper doves to the holiday tree the last week in November
- Setting up the holiday tree the last week in November
- Preparing ornaments for shipment in mid-December
- Taking down the tree the first week in January

Volunteers sew lap blankets, afghans, gowns, and positioning pillows to be used by hospice patients.
