Meet the Volunteers of VNA

VNA was founded more than 80 years ago by volunteers who saw an urgent need in the community. Today, VNA continues to provide care every day through the generosity of others. We are grateful for the more than 5,000 active volunteers who assist us with a wide range of activities like providing companionship to patients near the end of life and delivering Meals on Wheels. Each day we deliver 4,700 meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults in need of nutrition and social connection. This summer we are visiting our 22 Meals on Wheels pick-up locations throughout Dallas County to thank our volunteers and capture their enthusiasm and stories. Below are links to a few of the videos we created to capture the great work of our dedicated volunteers. Enjoy!

Central Market Kept Volunteers Safe During Texas Summer

Delivering Meals on Wheels can be especially rigorous for our volunteers and drivers during the grueling months of a Texas summer. To help keep all of our volunteers and paid drivers comfortable and safe, VNA gives out bottled water at the VNA Haggerty Kitchen as well as all 22 drop sites throughout the county. Bottled water for 300 volunteers every day through the summer can be expensive, so we reached out to the community for help and Central Market answered the call!

On Monday, July 24, Central Market donated 100 12-bottle cases to VNA Meals on Wheels! This generous donation will help all of the Meals on Wheels volunteers and drivers stay safe as they deliver more than 4,700 meals to the many seniors and disabled adults throughout Dallas County.

Central Market has been a valued partner in fighting senior hunger with VNA for many years. We’re so grateful for their commitment and support! If you would like to donate water for our volunteers, go to our Amazon Wishlist or make a donation through the VNA website and add “water” in the memo line. Your Advocate, the Social Worker

Hospice care involves a skilled team of interdisciplinary professionals including nurses, chaplains and social workers. Many people have questions regarding the role of a social worker in the hospice care team. Social workers are advocates for patients and advocacy in the hospice setting takes on many different forms. Social workers listen to the desires of the patients and their families to help determine how the care plan should take shape. For example, how does a patient want to spend his/her final weeks, days, moments? Perhaps one patient longs to make amends with a family member. Another patient may want to be outside as much as possible.

Answers to this question will be unique for each and every one of us. The social worker assists in helping make each patient’s last days look the way he/she wants. Social workers also work with patients and families to assist with financial stressors by supplying information and resources. Concerns regarding finances often come up near the end of life. Hospice social workers are well trained and often well versed at navigating systems pertaining to insurance coverage, disability benefits, and funeral costs. Social workers also assist in the process of helping patients decide what memorial/funeral arrangements they want made and helping communicate those wishes to family members.

The grief family members may experience as their loved one nears death can be profound; the same is true for patients themselves. Social workers provide support and counseling to these patients who may experience fear, anxiety, and many other emotions while receiving hospice care. With their specialized training, social workers possess the information, resources and skills to help patients and their families move through the grief process.

Every patient is different emotionally, spiritually, culturally. And every patient and family has different ideas about what his/her individualized care plan should look like. Hospice social workers advocate for patients and their families to make their final moments as meaningful as possible in whatever way(s) desired.

I am continually amazed by the dedication of the thousands of volunteers who help us move our mission forward.  As many of you know, volunteers are the life blood of community organizations and impact communities for the better. This is especially true at VNA; I know we could not fulfill our mission without the continued service of our volunteer friends, and I am grateful to each and every one of you. Through the summer I have heard from so many volunteers about how providing service to others is as important to them personally as the care or meal they provide others. I have always thought giving back is an important part of supporting our community—our home. If you are not already a volunteer with us and want to make a difference in the life of a senior, please join us!  Visit bit.ly/2hGoyAg and one our staff members will be happy to help you get started.

Gratefully,
