VNA Today June 2017

Easy, Fun & Meaningful

Take a break from the daily summer heat and join us for a trip to see your town in a new way! We’ll give you a map with top destinations where you will deliver Meals on Wheels to some really special seniors who will be thrilled to see you! This journey may take you to parts of the city you haven’t seen before, will let you meet new people, and will leave you feeling refreshed as you see the impact of your time and service on people who truly needed your help. Delivering Meals on Wheels is easy, fun, and meaningful.

Got kids and looking for a “free” summer activity? Teach them about giving back and making a difference just by giving their time and the kindness of a smile. If you’d like to make drawings or greeting cards to brighten the days of our seniors, you can deliver them with the meals on your route!

We have routes open in all parts of town and it takes about an hour and a half to deliver most routes, with delivery usually starting at 10:30. Contact volunteer@vnatexas.org to schedule your Meals on Wheels route for one special day, once a week, once a month, or pick a week and do it each day!

Meet a Meals on Wheels Client

“I was born in this house.” She grew up in the neighborhood, has life-long friends, a church nearby, and plans to stay in her home forever. Well, she says with a wink, “Unless I get married, then I’ll move!”

With a variety of serious ailments including a heart attack and blood clots, she bounces between using a wheelchair full-time and walking carefully with the help of a walker. The ramp in front of her house helps her get in and out of her home safely, but it is a struggle to do almost everything. Having meals delivered means she knows she’ll be able to eat something nutritious. Her favorite meals are the barbeque chicken and chicken salad.

She loves to meet all the volunteers that come to deliver the meals. Some do a quick hello and drop off, some stay and talk a while on the porch. While she tries to make it to church each week, she says that sometimes she can’t leave the house for long periods of time, and having a visitor makes all the difference.

For volunteers who are able to stay and chat, they’re treated to mesmerizing stories of her life that include obtaining a college degree when it wasn’t the norm for young black women to achieve that level of education, tales of volunteering for Dallas city and county boards and commissions for 17 years with perfect attendance, strong involvement in her faith community, and a woman who is still fiercely passionate about local politics. In fact, she has a very large campaign sign in her yard and quickly asks visitors if they will be voting in the upcoming election. Savvy volunteers will know the correct answer is, “Yes, ma’am!”

She never had children, and she wonders how she will be able to continue to live alone as the years continue to roll on. She cites her strong network of friends, her church, and Meals on Wheels, as reasons she thinks she will be able to stay in her house.

Serving seniors who have helped shape Dallas and now depend on the community to give back, is a joy that we are proud to share with the community. Join us on a summer journey by delivering Meals on Wheels and meet your community in a whole new way.

Photojournalist Guy Reynolds Captures His Meals on Wheels Route in Stunning Photography Show

When professional skills and passion intersect, they provide a beautiful picture of the world. Photojournalist Guy Reynolds delivered Meals on Wheels for three years in South Dallas and Fair Park neighborhoods. His view of the people, their homes, pets, and lives have been captured with his camera in a way most never see.

Guy's compassion and service led to a moving photography show and artist reception which helped raise more than $3,000 for Meals on Wheels and took two people off the waiting list.

He’s back delivering meals to some of his favorite clients and still snapping photos. Read about his experience delivering VNA Meals on Wheels and thoughts on this unique project by clicking on the photo below. (Clients are only photographed with their consent.)

Have You Had the Conversation?

Did you know that 90% of people say talking with their loved ones about end-of-life care is important, but only 27% have actually done so? Last year we began offering “Being Mortal” community events that explore the relationship doctors have with patients as they are nearing the end of life, based on Atul Gawande’s book and FRONTLINE documentary, both named “Being Mortal.”

We’ll soon be kicking off community events utilizing the tools from The Conversation Project. It helps initiate open and honest conversations with loved ones before a medical crisis happens, giving everyone a shared understanding of what matters most to each person at the end of life. If you’d like to learn how to facilitate community events on this topic as a VNA volunteer, we’ll be hosting a Train the Trainer event on July 19 from 2-4 pm at our VNA Haggerty Center, 1440 W. Mockingbird Lane. Email events@vnatexas.org to reserve your spot or find out more information.

School's out and we’re all making plans for another summer. For many of our volunteers, those plans include vacations that mean they won’t be available to deliver their regular Meals on Wheels routes. As a friend of VNA, I invite you to spend some time with us this summer by volunteering! We have ways to get involved for kids, for groups, for families, and for individuals. So often people will tell me they adore the clients on their route or if they are volunteering with hospice, how a patient has become so dear they’ve really brought a special kind of connection to his or her life. If you’ve got some time to share, we can help make it a meaningful experience. You may just find this is your best summer yet!

Gratefully,
