Power of Pie - Serving delicious pie and hope for seniors
Purchase Your Pie

The 5th Annual Power of Pie is in full swing and we want YOU to be a part of it!

Why Pie? The idea of Power of Pie was born of the idea that pie is a truly special thing. It stands out amongst practically all other foods as a symbol of comfort, home, and family. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches and we reflect on the past year, nothing could be more important.

What’s the Power of Pie? It’s pie roulette! You order a pie without knowing who the baker of the pie is, and are then surprised when you pick up your pie and bring it to your Thanksgiving table. Want to know who the generous chefs and bakers are this year? Click Here.

What programs benefit from my donation?
For $25, we offer North Texas families a way to experience some of the best baked pies our community has to offer, with 100% of the proceeds directly supporting Meals on Wheels and Hospice Care for charitable patients. Each day, VNA delivers meals to more than 4,700 of our homebound senior neighbors in Dallas. During the holidays, VNA helps patients and clients know they are not alone.

Light up a Life - Crystal Ornament Sales End Friday

Each year VNA offers friends and family of lost loved ones a way to honor their memory on the Light Up a Life Holiday Tree. With a suggested donation of $10 your paper dove will be placed on one of the four community trees, or you can purchase a personal inscribed crystal keepsake ornament for $100. Your gift to the annual Light Up a Life program for VNA Hospice Care will ensure VNA can continue to provide compassionate end-of-life care for patients, caregivers, and loved ones—no matter their ability to pay.

Once Alone But Never Forgotten

We recently had the opportunity to visit with Meals on Wheels client, Buford, 87, at his home in Dallas. Frail, isolated and struggling with complicated health issues, he shared his story with us. In 1943, Buford moved from Oklahoma with his family when he was only 13 years old. Raised on several farms throughout Oklahoma and Dallas, he says, “Dallas is my home—even though I was born in Oklahoma.” He spoke lovingly of his late wife and their lives together, happily married for 57 years.

Buford worked a variety of jobs—from selling insurance to being a custodian, but he had one true passion. “I loved to cook. I was raised on country food. When my wife was at work, I would make the meals and have it ready for her when she got home.”

Buford and his wife didn’t have any children, and when she died, he found himself alone. That’s when he turned to Meals on Wheels two years ago. “I used to donate to the program, and now I need the help. You have to give to receive,” he says. Buford spoke fondly of the program and the friendly volunteer who delivers his meals. “Meals on Wheels is wonderful. It’s nice to get a visit from Charley every day. I wouldn’t know what else I’d do.”

Hospice is a word many know but few truly understand. For the nurses, aides, social workers, and chaplains who work with hospice patients and their families, there is only one way to explain hospice: it’s a gift. Hospice care is intended to provide a holistic system of care including medical, psychological, social and spiritual support to the terminally ill and their families. The care is designed to control pain, manage symptoms and provide emotional support.

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month as well as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness and Family Caregivers Month. As the oldest hospice agency in the state of Texas, VNA has provided care to countless patients and their families, including those suffering from Alzheimer’s. In efforts to better serve the specialized needs of these patients, VNA developed the Music Therapy Program. Through the purposeful use of music, our board-certified music therapist helps to increase communication and relaxation for the patient, facilitate reminiscence and coping for families, and enhance the quality of life for patients. As a result, patients often experience improvement in their ability to recall memories as well as their loved ones.

The Alzheimer's Association has published research highlighting the growing evidence that music can help patients recall lost memories and help maintain cognitive function (2013). VNA is committed to providing the most compassionate comprehensive care available to patients and their families during this special month and throughout the year. Let me extend my own personal thank you to all of you, our VNA supporters, for making our community work possible.

Gratefully,
