A Servant’s Heart and an Iron Will —
Honoring the Life of Mary Bartholow
Learn what it's like to volunteer with VNA Hospice

We at VNA have heavy hearts as we mourn the loss of long-time VNA Meals on Wheels volunteer and VNA Lifetime Board Member Mary Bartholow. For those of you who had the privilege of knowing Mary, you knew she was passionate about serving wherever she was needed—whether driving Meals on Wheels with her daughters, organizing 180 volunteers from the Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, or coordinating the annual toiletry drives for the VNA Holiday Gift Project.

Mary’s journey with VNA Meals on Wheels began in 1987, when she read a newspaper article about VNA’s need for volunteers. She and her husband immediately answered the call, taking on a weekly route in South Dallas. For more than 31 years, Mary compassionately gave of her time, talent and treasure to ensure no senior was left hungry or alone. Mary offered kindness, dedication and compassion to all who had the honor of knowing her.

Mary was truly an inspiration to her volunteers who referred to her as their “shepherd” as she radiated the power of kindness and giving. In 2017, VNA created a volunteer appreciation award named after Mary for her extraordinary service and Mary was the first recipient.

VNA will always be grateful for Mary’s giving spirit and tireless efforts to help seniors age with dignity and independence at home. You can help us carry on her legacy through the joyful volunteer experience of delivering Meals on Wheels. Please consider becoming a volunteer or invite others to volunteer and join us in keeping her family in your thoughts and prayers.

New Technology Will Transform VNA Meals on Wheels

Today, 42% of all 4,500 daily meals are delivered by volunteers.  In order to proactively recruit new volunteers in areas of high need, VNA Meals on Wheels is hard at work on the development of our NEW Volunteer Portal which will enable us to recruit more volunteers to serve more seniors and facilitate a better volunteer experience for you!  For every route a volunteer delivers, we save enough money in paid driver expenses to feed a senior for an entire week.  If all routes were delivered by volunteers, the money saved in paid driver expenses would eliminate the VNA Meals on Wheels wait list which now consists of more than 800 seniors. The new volunteer portal will offer the following:

  • Empower volunteers to access their schedule, view upcoming routes and sign up to drive additional routes

  • Simplify the new volunteer experience through online access to training conveniently reaching new volunteers more quickly

  • Enable volunteers to share their experience and invite friends to sign up as new volunteers

  • Support efforts to provide more meals to more people through increased visibility of opportunities for volunteer involvement.

With 12,000 people turning 65 every day, we are excited about how this initiative will combat hunger and isolation in our community by engaging current and new volunteers to carry out mission helping seniors age with dignity at home.  We are grateful for the generosity of The Lyda Hill Foundation and Toyota who generously funded this innovative technology.  Stay tuned for your opportunity to dive into the new system if you are already a volunteer or test drive the Meals on Wheels experience for the first time.

Sincerely,
