VNA Today May 2018
Going Beyond Medical Care

When patients’ needs go beyond medical care, VNA is here to help.  The Murchison Patient Fund was established in 2005 through the generosity of the Ginger Murchison Foundation to provide our patients and their families with supplies and financial assistance to ease the burden they and loved ones face at the end of life.  Other generous donors have also been inspired to give to the fund over the years to provide non-medical necessities such as bed and bath linens, hospital gowns, basic toiletry items, and in some circumstances, assistance with funeral costs and paying phone bills, rent and utility payments.  For patients with young children at home, we have purchased school supplies and Christmas gifts their terminally ill parent is unable to provide.

One study showed that, for patients needing substantial care, 10% of household income was spent on healthcare; families had to take out a loan or second mortgage, spend savings, or take an additional job to cover these costs.

The economic burdens of end-of-life caregiving are complicated by the many social and psychological consequences of caregiving.

After helping our patient Rose with her phone bill, we received a kind note from her daughter saying, “Thank you for your help and kindness.  This is such a rough spot for us and I can’t imagine not being able to connect with Mom.  You all are such a helpful blessing.”

VNA could not provide the comfort and compassion to patients and their family caregivers without the generous support of donors like you.  You can make a difference by contributing to this vital fund.

VNA & The Senior Source Announce Action Planning
Phase of North Texas Plan for Older Adults
Summer Volunteer Opportunites

Last November, North Texas’ premier advocates for seniors, The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) and The Senior Source, announced they were launching a first-of-its-kind collaboration to build an Action Plan for North Texas with the goal to create a better system of service for older adults with support from the Better Together Fund.

On Tuesday, May 15, at the Communities Foundation of Texas, the two agencies will be convening a cross-sector of stakeholders from Dallas and Collin Counties, including healthcare providers, policymakers, philanthropists, nonprofits, businesses, and senior activists to address the community-wide needs of the growing population of 65 and older. The first phase of the collaborative effort will be sharing a baseline report, which builds on the recently-released results of the Dallas Economic Opportunity Assessment. The report identifies data trends as well as critical gaps in the current services available to seniors. Click on this article for additional information.

Last November, VNA and The Senior Source, announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind collaboration to build an Action Plan for North Texas with the goal to create a better system of service for older adults with support from the Better Together Fund.

The first phase of the collaborative effort will be sharing a baseline report, which builds on the recently-released results of the Dallas Economic Opportunity Assessment.  The report identifies data trends as well as critical gaps in the current services available to seniors.

As America’s population grows, it is estimated that by 2050, people over age 65 will represent more than 20 percent of the population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, just before 2020, elderly adults will begin to outnumber young children and this trend is likely to continue. While there is an industry of senior service providers and facilities being created almost every day, many baby boomers retiring will struggle with poverty and need to rely upon government and nonprofit support.   Many of those moving into their golden years will not be able to utilize the cost-prohibitive senior care facilities being built today. As such, ensuring seniors have access to the proper resources is more critical than ever to the community.

As a valued supporter of VNA and champion for seniors in North Texas, I want to personally invite you to join us on Tuesday, May 15 from 9 am – noon at the Communities Foundation of Texas.  Click here to RSVP for the event.  Thank you for your commitment to seniors in North Texas.

Sincerely,
