Music Therapy Offers More Than Just Comfort
Learn what it's like to volunteer with VNA Hospice

Mike was a jazz musician. True, that had not been his full-time profession or identity, but it was what he loved. Now that he was in memory care and unable to be independent, Mike was increasingly depressed and agitated. The staff had difficulty in gaining Mike’s cooperation for personal care and administering medication. He was referred to music therapy to help with his depression and agitation.

When VNA’s music therapist, Karen, visited with Mike, she handed him his own guitar usually stored in his closet. He did not know what to do with it, but his words were filled with wonder. In his confused language, he talked about what a beautiful instrument it was. His fingers stroked the strings without making a sound. He looked up at Karen, “We could go on the road. We could sing under someone’s window and they’d give us money.” He talked about getting serious about practicing so we could go on the road together, all the while his fingers tapped and gently caressed the guitar. Karen began to play on her own guitar and sang Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again.” Mike was almost starry-eyed. In that moment, he had hopes and dreams. He had purpose.

When Karen checked back with the facility before her next visit, they told her how helpful the music therapy session had been. Mike had been much more cooperative, and his spirits seemed lifted. They had even taken to keeping the guitar out so Mike would have access to it whenever he wanted. Each time Mike has a music therapy visit, he is given an instrument to hold. Sometimes he plays it, sometimes he simply holds it, but when the music starts, he always gets that dreamy look of hope in his eyes.

VNA Hospice Care offers music therapy, especially for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. For more information, please contact Sarah Harris at 214-689-2989 or harriss@vnatexas.org.

VNA is approaching a huge milestone—85 years of providing compassionate care for North Texans.  Quality, integrity and a pioneering spirit have helped us become the premier health care and social service organization we are today. It is only through the incredible dedication of our donors, volunteers and staff that we are able to carry out our vital mission to help seniors age with dignity and independence at home.

The pioneering spirit of VNA is alive and well with the highly successful launch of VNA Care Choices, our Medicare-sponsored palliative care program.  This innovative program is expanding our reach and ability to care for terminally ill patients.  The success of VNA Care Choices is largely due to our expert staff who have been willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the program’s success—adapting to new approaches and offering ideas along the way.  Our clinical team is led by Olivia Rogers, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.  Her outstanding leadership of this vital program is being noticed in our community and I am proud to announce that she has been selected as a finalist for the D CEO 2018 Excellence in Healthcare Awards for Achievement in Community Outreach! Congratulations, Olivia and thank you, D CEO!

Also, we have the incredible opportunity to embrace dramatic change within our Meals on Wheels program with the launch of our new volunteer scheduling, drop-site and back-office technology tools, which will increase our efficiency, allow us to recruit more volunteers and ultimately serve more hungry seniors.

I am calling on you, our generous supporters, now more than ever, to support the innovation unfolding at VNA.  As our champions, we hope you will embrace the new Volunteer Portal tool as well as share with you friends and family about the innovative work we are able to do thanks to your support.  You have the power to help VNA build on our traditions and innovate in our next 85 years.  Thank you for all you do for seniors in North Texas.

Sincerely,
