Society ’34 Celebrates One Year Anniversary

VNA’s Young Professional group, Society ‘34 is celebrating its one-year anniversary. Formed in June 2016, the group aims to educate, serve, and provide networking opportunities for young professionals in the Dallas area. Membership is open to anyone between the ages of 24-44.

Granddaughter Pays It Forward

With the generosity and support of people like you, VNA is able to provide hot, nutritious meals to our senior neighbors and offer the essential comfort and care to our hospice patients and their families.  None of this is possible without the support of our donors and volunteers.

One special donor recently included this note with her gift: “You were there for my grandmother back in the ‘90s when we couldn’t always be there. For that, I’m so, so grateful. You’re helping so many people in need and I want to be a part of that as much as possible. Praying for your continued success.”  - Kim, granddaughter of a former Meals on Wheels client.

To Kim and all of our generous donors—we cannot thank you enough for your support and willingness to stand with us. Please continue to share why you give to VNA by posting on social media, giving us a call or dropping us a note.

VNA Engages Community in Conversations About Aging with Dignity

Paul Rambler, VNA Chaplain | Stephen Hines, MD | Lori Leu, Elder Law Attorney (Left to Right)

Did you know that 90% of people say talking with their loved ones about end-of-life care is important, but only 27% have actually done so? A year ago, VNA was chosen as a screening site for Hospice Foundation of America’s Being Mortal project. Underwritten by the John and Wauna Harman Foundation, the project uses PBS’s FRONTLINE film Being Mortal, based on the book of the same name by Atul Gawande, MD, to educate audiences and encourage people to take concrete steps toward identifying and communicating their wishes at the end of life.

VNA has engaged both medical professionals and the general public in a dialogue concerning an inescapable reality of life: death.

We gathered friends, neighbors and peers to watch the documentary followed by a question/answer session with a panel of experts. Since VNA began the project, there have been five screenings including one at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. The special viewing was geared toward seniors in the community as part of Methodist’s Generations “Boomer U” programming with more than 200 people in attendance. Click here to watch the Q&A portion of the event. (Video bit.ly/2tVCgEu)

Next month VNA will kick off community events utilizing the tools from The Conversation Project helping initiate open and honest conversations with loved ones before a medical crisis. If you’d like to learn how to facilitate community events on this topic as a VNA volunteer, we’ll be hosting a Train the Trainer event on July 19 from 2-4 pm in partnership with Dallas Area Gerontological Society at our VNA Haggerty Center (1440 W. Mockingbird Lane). Email Paula at Schofieldp@vnatexas.org to reserve your spot or find out more information. Yahoo users can visit: bit.ly/conversationproject

Many of you know VNA’s mission is to help seniors age with dignity and independence at home, but did you also know that part of our work is to connect generations, creating awareness about seniors’ needs?  The VNA Teen Board gathers students from 19 North Texas area high schools to educate them about senior needs, provide service opportunities and gain valuable leadership skills. As we approach Society ‘34’s first anniversary, we are helping young professionals who may be experiencing the challenges of the sandwich generation, caring for children and parents, to connect with the aging resources they need for themselves and their community.  If you or your loved one needs help initiating a conversation with a loved one about your end-of-life wishes, I encourage you to attend The Conversation Project event this month.  No matter what life stage, VNA is here to provide you with the guidance and resources you need to help you and your loved ones age with dignity.

Gratefully,
