VNA Today December 2017

Once A Stranger, But Now Family

In a home in South Dallas, Meals on Wheels client, Vera, and Meals on Wheels volunteer, Alysse, met with VNA to share their special story.

Born and raised in Waco, Texas in 1943, Vera decided to relocate to Dallas to become a nurse as she enjoyed helping others and giving back to the community. An avid traveler, Vera always found time to volunteer beginning with feeding the homeless at her church. As time went on, she began losing her sight and it was then she knew she needed Meals on Wheels. Vera is now fully blind and says, “I could prepare a meal in the microwave, but now that isn’t even safe anymore.”

Alysse first became a Meals on Wheels volunteer six years ago. “I got involved with VNA because I wanted to volunteer with an organization where you can actually see the impact you’re making.” It was soon after she began delivering that Vera began receiving meals. “Vera opened her home to me. She was so friendly and wanted me to come and sit with her to talk. She doesn’t have children of her own, and I feel now as if I am her child.” Ms. Jones smiled, and added, “I look forward to all my Meals on Wheels deliveries, but Alysse is special. She helps me feel not so lonely. She’s like my daughter.”

The love and companionship shared between the two is indescribable—from once a stranger to now considering one another family. The servant heart embodied by these incredible women is a warm reminder of the joy of volunteering. And VNA Meals on Wheels brought them together.

You too can give back to VNA this holiday season, through delivering Meals, or making a gift to our homebound seniors.

It’s a wrap!

VNA saw a great turnout for our Subaru “Share the Love” Holiday Gift Wrap party on Tuesday, December 5. Volunteers wrapped toiletry items and assembled gift bags to help VNA reach our goal of 5,000 bags for delivery to Meals on Wheels clients and Hospice Care patients on Christmas Day. Not only do these special holiday gift bags include shampoo, lotion, a toothbrush, toothpaste, Kleenex and a pair of socks, they also include a lot of love! Sewell Subaru’s John Ward came out and spoke about the wonderful impact made by VNA. “Meals on Wheels is truly a ministry. Thank you for what you do for the community.” For more information about the Subaru Share the Love event and how they support Meals on Wheels America, please visit https://www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org/.

As we approach the holidays, I am reminded of all the wonderful ways VNA and our supporters have helped seniors in the North Texas community. Following the success of Power of Pie raising more than $37,000, the delivery of 4,600 meals on Thanksgiving morning, and the preparation of nearly 5,000 holiday gift bags for our clients and patients on Christmas Day—we have much to be thankful for this year. The holiday season makes it even more evident that we are truly better together.

We recently announced VNA’s collaboration with The Senior Source to create a unified approach for elevating care and expanding services for seniors in North Texas. This collaboration is made possible through the Better Together Fund, a pilot program to drive large-scale social change by supporting nonprofits that join efforts for a common cause thereby maximizing impact. As supporters and volunteers of VNA, you may know of other organizations helping seniors. Please encourage these organizations to complete a survey to help plan for how to better serve our seniors www.surveymonkey.com/r/NT4seniors.

During this special time of year, I want to thank each of you for your gifts which come in many forms. You make VNA and our community better for seniors throughout North Texas. I wish you and yours a warm and joyful holiday season.

Warmest wishes,
