The Visiting Nurse Association of Texas, which has offered hospice services for decades, is planning to extend those services to provide free end-of-life care for Dallas-Fort Worth’s most vulnerable residents.
The home healthcare non-profit announced details of its new VNA Hospice House in Dallas’ Wilson Historic District on Wednesday, October 22, during a preview event at the facility. It’s the first and only dedicated home in North Texas to give seriously ill patients lacking either suitable housing, financial means or an appropriate caregiver a “safe place to die with dignity and respect,” the VNA said.
“The patients will be people who have no home, or no caregiver if they are at home, or they have unsafe living conditions at home,” said Kyle Francis, the VNA’s director of donor relations and grants.
The facility will be located in an historic, two-story, Victorian-style home at 2800 Swiss Avenue. The five-bedroom house, originally built across the street in 1896 by stonemason Theodore Beilharz, was relocated and preserved in 1981 as part of the Wilson District by The Meadows Foundation. The District’s a first-of-its-kind neighborhood providing local non-profits with rent-free space.
Once it’s remodeled starting in January and brought up to all the appropriate codes, the Hospice House plans to open its doors to patients in the first quarter of 2027. They’ll receive 24-hour care including nursing, social work and spiritual support in “a warm, intimate environment,” the non-profit said. Because the average stay in other VNA hospice programs is two weeks, the organization foresees the facility serving about 125 patients a year.
