We’re excited to announce the opening of the first and only Assisted Living Facility in North Texas for seriously ill individuals with no place to turn. Katherine’s House will provide a safe, compassionate place for patients without adequate housing, caregivers, or resources to spend their final days with dignity. Scheduled to open in Dallas in 2027, this five-bedroom home will offer 24-hour care and the full benefits of hospice in a warm, supportive environment.
Why VNA is Embarking on this Mission
Traditionally offered in the home, hospice care provides compassionate medical, emotional, and spiritual support at the end of life, but many North Texans cannot access it due to homelessness, unsafe housing, or the lack of a caregiver. These individuals often remain in hospitals or nursing facilities until they pass—options that are costly and not reflective of dignified end‑of‑life care.
North Texas currently has no dedicated place for seriously ill patients who lack safe housing or support. VNA is addressing this gap by creating Katherine’s House, ensuring that every person can receive compassionate hospice care and die with dignity.
How VNA Will Meet the Need
Katherine’s House will be the first and only hospice facility in North Texas for patients who are unable to receive care in their own home. The Meadows Foundation has generously leased a home in the Wilson Historic District to VNA at no cost to make this vision a reality.
The five-bedroom home will provide a warm, intimate environment where patients receive 24-hour care and all the services of home hospice, including nursing, social work, spiritual care, and volunteer support. Given the immense need in the community, VNA anticipates serving 125 patients each year, with an average stay of two weeks per patient.
Project milestones include:
- Spring 2026: Begin remodeling the home to include private bedrooms, staff work areas, meal preparation space, and medical supply storage.
- January 2027: Completion of construction and admission of first patients through referrals from local hospital systems.
- Post-Opening: Apply for Assisted Living Facility licensure through the State of Texas once patients are admitted.
What You Can Do
VNA is seeking partners to help fund the remodeling of Katherine’s House and to provide operating support during its first five years. You can be part of this first-of-its-kind effort to ensure the most vulnerable among us can spend their final days in peace, surrounded by dignity, compassion, and care. Call Jennifer Austin at 214-384-9515 for information.
Here’s what our clinical partners are saying:
“The availability of a place for our most marginalized patients when their need is greatest is something that would provide dignity and care to those that have often rarely experienced it. We have patients that continue a cycle of discharge and readmit for weeks leading up to their deaths, simply due to a lack of a support system to mobilize and coordinate a housing option. Or, lack of available caregivers for our younger patients whose families work full-time and have no option to stay home and provide care around the clock. The ongoing work to create this vital space is so appreciated. We eagerly await news on progress!”
