VNA Partners in Groundbreaking Study on What Ultimately Causes Death from Cancer
|
A recent UT Southwestern study published in Nature Medicine sheds new light on what ultimately causes death in many cancer patients. Researchers found that tumor infiltration into major blood vessels, rather than metastasis alone, can trigger blood clots and multiorgan failure.
The study was made possible in part through the support of VNA and our hospice partners, who helped researchers monitor patients in hospice care and provided critical insights into end-of-life health changes. By collaborating with VNA, the study team gained a deeper understanding of the final stages of cancer, which could inform new treatments to extend survival.

A Message from VNA President and CEO, Chris Culak VNA Urging an End to the Government Shutdown
|
VNA, alongside Meals on Wheels America and senior care partners nationwide, is deeply concerned about the impact of recent SNAP cuts, which have now gone into effect. Millions of Texans are losing critical food support — worsening senior hunger, isolation, and hardship while straining programs like Meals on Wheels.
These cuts to SNAP and other vital programs mean:
- Increased hunger — more seniors now rely on Meals on Wheels for their only daily meal.
- Greater strain on providers — longer waitlists and reduced services for vulnerable seniors.
- Higher healthcare costs — limited nutrition and wellness support can worsen chronic health conditions.
- More isolation — seniors lose the vital social connection provided by meal deliveries.
How you can help:
- Give: Just $7.77 provides a hot meal, safety check, and friendly visit. Donate here
- Volunteer: Deliver a route and feed a senior for a week. Sign up here
- Advocate: Contact Congress to protect seniors. Learn how at mealsonwheelsamerica.org/ways-to-advocate.
Every day matters for America’s seniors — your support makes an immediate impact.
